Now You See It, Now You Don't!

TellzAll's subject for October is the Poodle Skirt

Today, many people are fashion conscious. They want to dress in the most up-to-date clothing styles. People sometimes worry that others will judge them based on the clothes that they wear. Other people equate popularity with clothing, believing that the nicer or more up-to-date their clothing is, the more friends that they will have. There are numerous other reasons for why people want to wear the most popular clothing styles, but in a nutshell, people want to be accepted, stylish, and comfortable.

Today, many teenagers wear baggy and saggy jeans. Many adults object to this fashion trend, but have you ever asked adults what clothes they wore when they were growing up? Well, if your grandmothers were teenagers in the 1950s, they probably wore poodle skirts.

Poodle skirts typically were made from felt cloth. Most people believe that poodle skirts were made from either black or pink cloth, but actually skirts appeared in all types of colors. The skirt's hem fell to approximately mid calf on the wearer, and the skirt, itself, was very wide in style. The reason why this piece of clothing is called a poodle skirt is because a poodle appliqué or transfer was added to the skirt near its hem. Although known as poodle skirts because of the appliquéd poodle, other designs also were used, including cars, flamingos, and flowers.

Poodle skirts remained popular until the late 1950s. Many teenage girls during this era owned at least one such skirt, but as typically happens, this fad eventually passed away. Many costume companies continue to make the skirts for Halloween.
