Now You See It, Now You Don't!

TellzAll's subject for August is the Lite Brite!

Have you ever wondered what toys your parents enjoyed playing with when they were children? Well, if they grew up during the 1970s, your parents probably played with a "Lite-Brite."

Hasbro first sold "Lite-Brite" in 1967. Originally, the toy consisted of a white container that enclosed a twenty-five watt light bulb and a screen . Children would place a black sheet of paper between the screen and the light bulb and then would place translucent colored pegs through the screen and paper. When turned on, the light from the bulb would shine through the pegs, making a colorful display. Many children used these displays for nightlights. Hasbro provided users with instructions on how to make specific designs, but many children preferred creating their own displays.

During "Lite-Brite's" heyday, practically every child knew by heart the product's advertising song. Over the years, the words changed. Initially, the song's opening was, "Lite-Brite, Lite-Brite, Turn on the magical shining light!" The company eventually changed the lyrics to, "Lite-Brite, makin' things with light. Outtasite, makin' things with Lite-Brite."

Hasbro still produces "Lite-Brite" today, but this toy is not nearly as popular as it was just thirty years ago.
