The magic lantern, made in France, dates from the late 1800s. It is
similar to a modern-day slide projector. Glass slides were drawn through the
lantern near the front. The slides were illuminated from the rear by a
kerosene-burning lamp. The images were projected onto a screen or wall through
the lens at the front of the lantern.
