New materials and technologies have continually affected the
evolution of toys. Over the past forty years, toys have changed greatly
through the use of plastics. Recently, the introduction of electronics
has had an equally great impact.
Today's toys walk, talk, eat, wet, listen and respond to touch
and sound. They can even carry on conversations, compete with us, and
allow us to play with people around the globe in virtual worlds. Because
of these changes, toy makers no longer limit their appeals to children,
but direct their products to users of all ages.
While the toy industry has changed dramatically over the years,
many toys remain very much the same. Despite new materials and
technologies, some old favorites are popular generation after
generation. These toys have been friends, companions, and teachers to
children of the past. Today's children can enjoy the same benefits from
toys.
