JAMES WORTHINGTON (1802-1881)

"I am, Dear Sir, Your Most obedient son."

James was the third child and first son in the Worthington family. Because he was the eldest son, the Worthingtons knew he would eventually take over Adena and he was given greater responsibilities than his siblings. An earnest young man, James worked hard to please his father. He was educated at Ohio University in Athens and attended West Point. Because of his father's position, James had the opportunity to interact with prominent business and political leaders while still in quite young.

JAMES WORTHINGTON:
31 May, 1802:	James born on the Worthington estate.
1815:	James departed to Athens Ohio for school.
1816:	Entered West Point.
1817:	Left West Point at his father's request.
1828:	Married Julia Galloway of Xenia, Ohio.
1829-1845:	Eight children born to Julia and James Worthington; six survive to adulthood.
1848:	James became the master of Adena, following his mother's death.
1856:	Julia Galloway Worthington died at age 47. James married Martha Piatt Reed later the same year.
1881:	James T. Worthington died at age 79.
