Floor Matting

Straw Matting

Straw matting was a common floor covering in the 1800s. It is used in Adena in all the bedrooms.

From Eleanor Worthington’s will we know that there were floor matts (“matting”) at Adena:

"The matting and oil cloth carpets that are on the floors these I give to my son James T. Worthington."

The matting used at Adena was made in China using traditional methods. Indeed Chinese artisans have been making matting for centuries. It is very possible that the matting used by the Worthington’s came from the same area of China and looked pretty much like the matting made today.

Matting is used in cases instead of carpets. The best are India mats, which are used to lay over carpets, particularly in summer, from their being cool. They are durable.
