Mechanical Dolls:
Doll manufacturers have produced mechanical dolls throughout the
19th and 20th centuries. Patents for mechanical dolls were issued as
early as 1826 in the United States, and European manufacturers were
making mechanical dolls before that.
The following mechanical dolls are all of the windup variety. A spring
inside of the dolls, wound by a key, starts them in motion. The sailor,
made in Germany, rocks sideways at the waist. The female doll, patented
in 1862, walks forward. The baby doll raises her bottle to her mouth and
lowers it when activated. All of dolls still operate.
