Billikens:
Billikens were novelty dolls developed by the Billiken Sales
Company. The Horsman Doll Company patented Billikins in 1909. The dolls
were extremely popular during the years 1909 and 1910 and then quickly
faded from prominence.
Billikens had composition heads (see "Composition Dolls") and
were manufactured in two styles. One, with a cloth body, represented a
child. The other, called "Plushie," had the same "Can't Break 'Em" head
mounted on an animal body. Billikens cost $1.00. At the peak of their
popularity in 1910, more than one-half million were sold in six months.
