Electronic Games:
A. S. Douglas created the first computer game in 1952. It was a
version of tic-tac-toe that ran on a large, vacuum-tube-type computer.
Computer technology advanced over the next twenty years, and
more powerful and compact machines were produced. The new technology
enabled manufacturers to develop video games that could be played at
home.
In 1972, Magnavox released Odyssey, a gaming console that came
programmed with twelve games. Odyssey opened the floodgates to a wave of
electronic games and manufacturers.
Children and adults can now play games with people around the
globe in the privacy of their own homes, or they can take their games
with them on handheld devices when they leave their homes.
