Wooden Alphabet Blocks:
Alphabet blocks, which were used in 17th-century (1600s)
England, were perhaps the first toys created primarily for educational purposes.
They were useful for teaching children their "letters," and they could be
arranged to make words or to build objects. Late-19th century versions, such as
these, featured words, pictures, and stories, and could be used to learn size
relationships.
