SARAH WORTHINGTON (1800-1877)

"the effervescence of her character"

Of all the Worthington children, Sarah was probably most like her father. She had strong opinions and she acted on them (brother Thomas did as well, but he lacked the discipline of his father or sister). Sarah attended boarding school in Kentucky and Washington, DC. In 1816 she married Edward King, the son of a prominent New York family. King was a gambler, which strained their finances and marriage. After King’s death, Sarah moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where two of her sons were attending Harvard. She helped her brother Francis and two nephews attend college as well. In 1844 she married the British Consul to the United States, William Peter, with whom she toured Europe. They had no children. After Peter's death, Sarah traveled again to Europe, exploring her growing interest in Roman Catholicism. She converted in 1855, an act that was unusual in its day and showed more than a little courage. She moved to Cincinnati and began the philanthropic work for which she is remembered. Sarah brought a number of religious orders to the city to work among the poor, especially poor women.
