The Worthingtons Thomas Sr. Eleanor Sr. Mary Sarah James Albert Thomas Jr. Ellen Margaret Elizabeth William Francis |
ELLEN WORTHINGTON (1809 - 1863)"I will endeavor to learn fast." Eleanor was born at Adena, the sixth child and third daughter of Thomas and Eleanor Worthington. In the 1820s Ellen, as she was called, was educated, along with her sister Margaret, at Emma Willard's Academy in Troy, New York, an institution that was a pioneer in women's education. At the Willard school Ellen promised, "I will endeavor to learn fast." Returning to Ohio, she married Arthur Watts in 1832 and lived in Chillicothe for the rest of her life. The couple had eight children. Eleanor was plagued by bad eyesight and poor health, and she deeply grieved the early deaths of two of her children. In the 1850s, under the influence of her sister Sarah, Eleanor converted to Roman Catholicism. Arthur Watts could not accept his wife's change in belief, and the couple separated. Eleanor died on 10 April 1863.
