ELIZABETH WORTHINGTON (1814-1852)

"I had rather folks keep single."

The letters of Elizabeth, the Worthington's youngest daughter, illustrate the difficulties that many women experienced in the nineteenth century. After a romantic courtship, the high spirited Elizabeth married Charles Pomeroy. The young couple eventually moved to Meigs County in southeastern Ohio where Charles’s family owned a coal mine. The mine proved unsuccessful, however, and the family suffered from poverty and isolation. Elizabeth bore eleven children over a seventeen-year period and died at the age of 38.

1837:	Elizabeth's second child John born.

1841:	Elizabeth's forth child Charles born.
1843:	Elizabeth's fifth child Richard born.
1844:	Elizabeth's sixth child Arthur born.
1846:	Elizabeth's seventh child Maria (Lily) born but died at age two.
1848:	Elizabeth's eighth child Caroline born.
1850:	Elizabeth's ninth and tenth children Edward and Elizabeth born, but died as infants.
1852:	Elizabeth's eleventh child, also called Elizabeth, born.
1852 7 November:	Elizabeth R. Worthington Pomeroy died seven days after the birth of her last child.
