The Worthingtons Thomas Sr. Eleanor Sr. Mary Sarah James Albert Thomas Jr. Ellen Margaret Elizabeth William Francis |
ELIZABETH WORTHINGTON (1814-1852)"I had rather folks keep single." The letters of Elizabeth, the Worthington's youngest daughter, illustrate the difficulties that many women experienced in the nineteenth century. After a romantic courtship, the high spirited Elizabeth married Charles Pomeroy. The young couple eventually moved to Meigs County in southeastern Ohio where Charles’s family owned a coal mine. The mine proved unsuccessful, however, and the family suffered from poverty and isolation. Elizabeth bore eleven children over a seventeen-year period and died at the age of 38.
