Introduction - The Adena Culture

All of the following links will load in a new window.

Who came first? The Adena Culture or the Adena Estate?

The Adena estate came first, then the Adena Culture was named after the estate. Actually, the people who created the Adena Culture came first, because they were a prehistoric Indian culture that lived in Ohio from 800 BC to AD 100. They are older than Adena. But-- we do not know what they called themselves. The Adena Culture was so-named because of a mound found on land once part of the Adena estate. The site of the mound is now a residential neighborhood and not part of the historic site.
